Pasco Court System & Jurisdictions

Pasco County has two main levels of state courts — Circuit Court and County Court. Both are part of the Sixth Judicial Circuit and are subordinate to the Second District Court of Appeal.

Circuit Court

This is a court of general jurisdiction. Serious cases are handled here:

  • Felony criminal cases
  • Civil lawsuits over $50,000
  • Family cases — divorce, child custody, alimony (family law forms are approved by the Florida Supreme Court)
  • Probate cases — the process of settling a deceased person's estate
  • Juvenile cases

County Court

A speeding ticket or minor dispute with a neighbor is most likely to be heard here. County Court handles:

  • Misdemeanors — criminal offenses with a maximum punishment of up to one year
  • Civil lawsuits up to $50,000
  • Small claims cases — up to $8,000
  • Traffic violations
  • Local ordinance violations

If a case is appealed, the file moves to the Second District Court of Appeal, and documents become available through the Florida Appellate Case Information System.
